First Year Experience Program

2009-2010

The transition from high school to college can be a challenge for many first year students.  As a result, Michigan State University has developed a First Year Experience (FYE) program designed to assist students in adjusting to college life and handling the rigorous academic demands of the classroom.

The FYE program is a new and exciting initiative, designed to provide first year students with specific resources, support, and programming to help facilitate a successful transition and acclimation to Michigan State University. This collaborative effort among many MSU academic and student support units offers unique opportunities for students to explore, to learn more and to become better connected to the University.

The FYE program at Michigan State University has three key focus areas for students participating in the program:

  • Academic Success – The FYE program will play a key role in helping students remain at the University, progress in their studies and ultimately graduate from MSU.
  • Knowledge and Ability to Access University Resources – Through their involvement in the FYE program, students will learn about and utilize the wide variety of University resources available to them.
  • Establishing a Connection to the University – As a result of their participation in the FYE program, students will develop a strong connection and sense of belonging to Michigan State University – one that will help them to become contributing and fully engaged members of both their residence hall community and the greater MSU community.

Starting Fall Semester 2009, there will be an FYE pilot program in West Holden Hall.  This will allow proper assessment of the various initiatives associated with this program.  The program will be expanded over the next few years until it is fully implemented in all first year residence halls.
